The Refugee Law Project (RLP) hosted the 13th Conference of the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM) that took place in Kampala, Uganda from the 3rd to the 6th of July 2011, under the theme ‘Governing Migration’.

VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VVN) is door de Stichting 3R gevraagd in het kader van hun Matra-project, via het Nederlandse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, om aan HCA twee trainingen te verzorgen. In april 2011 hebben Goof van Dormolen en Annette Bombeke van het Landelijk Bureau van VluchtelingenWerk Nederland reeds een bezoek gebracht aan HCA. De training richtte zich met name op het werk en de organisatie van VluchtelingenWerk Nederland, en meer specifiek nog op het werk van VVN in de AC’s en AZC’s. Dit alles met het oog op de nog te bouwen opvangcentra voor asielzoekers in Turkije. In augustus 2011 was Arno Pinxter aan het beurt en stuurde ons deze missieverslag.

New Documentary on IDPs in Uganda

Stichting 3R Partner, the Refugee Law Project in the Faculty of Law, Makerere University have produced a new documentary on the situation of returning IDPs in Northern Uganda.

“Shoot Us All Down – The Lakang and Apaa Land Conflict in Amuru District” (12 mins) has been produced by the Refugee Law Project,  under the auspices of the Advisory Consortium on Conflict Sensitivity (ACCS). It is based on field research conducted in early August 2011 and can be viewed at www.refugeelawproject.org/video_advocacy.php

Public Interest Litigation in South Africa

This co-edited monograph by 3R Chairperson Jeff Handmaker with colleagues Jackie Dugard and Jonathan Klaaren at the University of the Witswatersrand was published as a special issue of the South African Journal on Human Rights.

The publication, which devotes considerable attention to litigation strategies on behalf of asylum seekers and refugees, consists of an introduction, six fully-fledged articles, four current developments or case notes and a number of related book reviews and incorporates both scholarly and practitioner-oriented perspectives.

3R Foundation partner, the Ugandan NGO Refugee Law Project (RLP), participated in a debate on Al-Jazeera’s current affairs programme Inside Story. Dr. Chris Dolan, Director of the RLP, spoke on behalf of his organisation’s work in this area, which has included the production of an award-winning documentary, Gender Against Men.

The Observer newspaper in the United Kingdom has published a major story about the work of the 3R partner, Refugee Law Project in Uganda regarding their extensive work on the subject of sexual violence. As the article begins:

“Sexual violence is one of the most horrific weapons of war, an instrument of terror used against women. Yet huge numbers of men are also victims. In this harrowing report, Will Storr travels to Uganda to meet traumatised survivors, and reveals how male rape is endemic in many of the world’s conflicts.”

Six Tibetans fleeing Chinese rule arrested in Dolakha

Nepal News, 12 July 2011

Police on Tuesday arrested six Tibetans for illegally sneaking into Nepal from Chinese administered Tibet.

The six fleeing Tibetans are said to be males between 20 to 30-years-old. They had entered Nepal from Lamabagar of Dolakha district, which shares border with Tibet, and managed to reach Singati Bazaar unnoticed through six police posts before being arrested by a police team from Area Police Office, Singati.

Short film on the Rwanda cessation clause

In December of 2011, all Rwandan refugees living in Uganda will lose their refugee status, under the presumption that Rwanda has achieved ethnic unity and stability. The testimonials presented in this short documentary, however, show that this stability is a fiction and there is still reason for them to seek asylum outside of Rwanda.
