Dr. Jeff Handmaker, Board member of the 3R Foundation and lecturer in law, human rights and development at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University in The Hague, visited the Helsinki Citizens Assembly (HCA) in Istanbul, Turkey from 5 to 6 July 2010, where he gave workshops for the refugee programme of HCA, reflecting on his earlier experiences with, and research on refugee rights advocacy in South Africa.
On Thursday 22 April 2010, the Refugee Law Project (RLP) celebrated 10 years of promoting rights of forced migrants. During this time, the organization has tremendously transformed from just providing legal aid to refugees and asylum seekers to handling issues of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), deportees, and transitional justice. As a way of ensuring that refugees & asylum seekers maintain a link with their families and friends both back home and those in countries abroad, the Refugee Law Project (RLP) with support from friends of the RLP set up a “free-to-access” computer facility with internet.

The 3R Foundation has recently funded the Forum for Protection of People’s Rights, Nepal (PPR Nepal) through the kind support of the ASN Foundation. The funds will be used to effectively initiate and implement a legal aid and psychosocial counseling programme to refugees currently residing in Nepal.

An estimated 100,000 people from 40 countries cross the Turkish border without identity papers every year. They come from trouble spots like Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan, and because they cannot be granted asylum in Turkey they are in a highly vulnerable situation.
Marieke van Eik, advocaat bij Böhler Franken Koppe Wijngaarden advocaten, vertrok voor twee dagen naar Istanboel om training te geven aan Helsinki Citizens’Assembly.

Homo’s, lesbiennes, biseksuelen en transseksuelen (LGBT) behoren tot de meest kwetsbare groep asielzoekers en vluchtelingen in Turkije. Na ontsnapt te zijn aan vervolging in eigen land, worden ze in Turkije opnieuw geconfronteerd met een oneerlijke behandeling, intimidatie en geweld.
Stichting 3R is per 1 maart 2009 een driejarig project gestart ter versterking van de rechtshulpverlening aan vluchtelingen in Turkije.
