Professor Jan Pronk teaches and researches in development studies at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University. After completing his studies, he worked as research assistant of Prof. Jan Tinbergen, choosing a political career in the seventies. In 1971 Pronk was elected as member of parliament for the Social‐Democratic Party (Partij van de Arbeid) and a few years later he became Minister for Development Cooperation. He later held numerous high‐level positions in the United Nations and in the Dutch government, including Minister of Environment. In 2004 Pronk was appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations as his Special Representative in Sudan, in order to lead the UN peace keeping operation (UNMIS). In 2007, he returned to the Netherlands.
